The Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) has issued a warning after a fake notice claiming to announce the opening date for 2026/27 Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) loan applications began circulating online.

The false communication alleged that first-time and subsequent loan applications would open on July 15, prompting HELB to urge students to ignore the misinformation and rely only on official updates.

The advisory comes as thousands of prospective KMTC students await confirmation of the official application window following the completion of the placement process.

HELB Debunks Fake KMTC Loan Application Notice

HELB dismissed the widely shared notice in a public advisory issued on Wednesday, July 1, stating that it had not released any communication announcing the opening of the 2026/27 KMTC loan application portal.

The board warned students against acting on unverified information, stressing that all announcements regarding loan applications will only be made through its official communication channels.

“The KMTC loan application notice circulating online is FAKE and was not issued by HELB. Always verify all communication through HELB’s official channels only,” the board stated.

The fake notice targeted students waiting for updates on both first-time and subsequent KMTC loan applications by claiming the portal would open on July 15.

However, HELB clarified that no official opening date has been announced.

Portal Expected to Open After KUCCPS Placement Process

While dismissing the fake notice, HELB indicated that the KMTC loan application portal is expected to open during the second week of July, subject to the completion of the placement process by the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS).

The placement exercise remains ongoing after KUCCPS allowed students who missed the application deadline to seek consideration by submitting requests through email following an extension of the application window.

As a result, HELB cannot open applications for first-time KMTC students until the placement exercise is completed.

The board has therefore urged applicants to remain patient and wait for an official announcement instead of relying on unofficial social media posts and forwarded messages.

HELB Lists Documents Students Should Prepare

Although the application portal has not yet opened for first-time applicants, HELB has advised students who sat the 2025 KCSE examinations to prepare the required documents in advance.

Applicants will need the following:

Required DocumentPurpose
National ID, Maisha Card or Birth CertificateIdentity verification
Passport-size photographApplicant profile
Active email addressAccount registration and communication
Mobile phone numberNotifications and verification
KCPE index number and examination yearAcademic verification
KCSE index number and examination yearAcademic verification

Meanwhile, HELB confirmed that subsequent loan applications for continuing students for the 2026/2027 academic year have been open since June 1.

The board also cautioned students against using unauthorised contact details circulating in the fake notice.

According to HELB, the phone number 0711052000 should not be used for enquiries or loan-related services, warning that scammers often exploit periods of high demand by sharing misleading contacts and fake application notices.

What Students Should Do Next

Students awaiting the opening of the KMTC loan application portal should monitor HELB's official communication channels for verified updates rather than relying on information shared through social media or messaging platforms.
