The Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) has issued a fresh directive to principals of all public senior secondary schools across the country. School heads now have seven days to submit updated Grade 10 enrollment figures and textbook distribution records.

The move comes as the Ministry of Education prepares for the second phase of textbook distribution under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

KICD says the updated data will help identify schools facing textbook shortages or surpluses and ensure every learner receives the required learning materials under the government's One-to-One textbook policy.

Accurate enrollment data will play a critical role in ensuring fair textbook distribution, supporting CBC implementation, and guaranteeing that every Grade 10 learner has access to essential learning resources.

KICD Seeks Updated Grade 10 Enrollment Data Ahead of Second Textbook Distribution Phase

KICD announced that the first phase of Grade 10 textbook distribution has already been completed using student enrollment data that the Ministry of Education initially provided. However, the institute now wants schools to confirm their actual Grade 10 enrollment numbers as recorded at the end of the first term of 2026.

The updated figures will guide the next round of textbook allocation to schools across the country.

In a notice issued on Friday, June 12, KICD Chief Executive Officer Charles Ong'ondo said accurate enrollment data is critical in ensuring that all learners receive the correct textbooks based on their chosen subjects.

According to the directive, principals must provide detailed information on the number of learners enrolled in each Grade 10 subject. They must also indicate the number of textbooks already received for every subject.

KICD explained that the information will help determine whether schools have enough books or require additional supplies. It will also help identify institutions that may have received more textbooks than needed.

The agency emphasized that the exercise is part of ongoing efforts to support the smooth implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum at the senior school level.

The updated records must be submitted through an online form provided by KICD. School heads have until June 19, 2026, to complete the exercise.

KICD noted that schools that have already submitted the required information do not need to send the data again.

Schools Asked to Report Textbook Shortages and Surplus Copies

Apart from updating enrollment figures, KICD has also directed schools to report any challenges related to textbook distribution.

Schools that have not received textbooks for certain subjects are expected to notify the institute immediately. Likewise, institutions that received more textbooks than required should report the excess stock to facilitate redistribution.

The agency says this process will help balance textbook allocation nationwide and ensure no learner is disadvantaged because of a lack of learning materials.

The government's One-to-One textbook policy aims to provide every learner with direct access to the books needed for classroom learning.

Accurate enrollment data remains a key factor in achieving that objective. KICD has encouraged school administrators to cooperate fully with the exercise and submit accurate information within the set deadline.

The institute has also established support channels for schools experiencing challenges during the reporting process. Principals can raise concerns regarding shortages, excess books, or other distribution issues through KICD's designated communication platforms, including its official email support service.

As the second phase of textbook distribution approaches, education stakeholders will be closely watching how quickly schools submit the required information. The data collected over the next seven days will play a major role in determining how effectively textbooks are distributed to Grade 10 learners across Kenya.

With thousands of students already enrolled under the CBC senior school pathway, timely and accurate reporting by principals is expected to help the Ministry of Education and KICD strengthen learning outcomes and improve access to educational resources in public schools.
