The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has released guidelines for the administration of the 2026 Grade 10 and vocational School-Based Assessments (SBA), directing schools to access assessment materials from July 2.

In a circular, the council instructed schools to download projects and practicals through the KNEC Competency-Based Assessment (CBA) portal, with assessments scheduled across Terms 2 and 3.

The assessments form part of the Competency-Based Education (CBE) curriculum and will contribute to learners' final Senior School grades.

KCSE results 780x470

Schools are expected to follow KNEC guidelines, submit accurate assessment scores and complete all Grade 10 School-Based Assessments within the stipulated timelines.

Projects, Practicals and Tests Scheduled

According to KNEC, projects and practical assessments will be conducted during Term 2, while written tests will take place in Term 3.

Schools must upload learners' scores by October 31 through the CBA portal.

Principals have been tasked with downloading assessment tools, supervising their administration, and submitting results, while teachers will assess learners using official scoring rubrics.

KNEC Warns Against Malpractice

The council directed schools to maintain evidence of learners' work, including videos, photographs, recordings, and other electronic portfolios where applicable.

Schools have also been encouraged to use locally available materials where necessary during practical assessments.

Grade 10 Scores to Count Towards Final Results

KNEC warned that uploading fabricated scores or awarding marks outside the official guidelines will be treated as examination malpractice and could attract administrative action.

The council confirmed that the Grade 10 SBA will contribute 15 per cent of a learner's final Grade 12 score across STEM, Social Sciences, Arts, Sports, and vocational pathways.

The guidelines come as schools continue registering Grade 10 learners on the CBA portal ahead of the July 30 registration deadline.
